About Kalabaka

Kalabaka is a town in the Prefecture of Trikala and is the capital of the Municipality of Meteora. It is located in the center of Greece and extends to the northwestern part of the Thessalian plain. It is built next to the rare geological phenomenon of Meteora, while the river Pinios passes by. It was inhabited since ancient times by the name Aeginio. Its permanent population amounts to 8,330 inhabitants and is the second largest city of Regional Unity after Trikala. Each year more than 2,000,000 tourists visit Kalabaka.

From the city of Kalabaka starts the railway network that connects Kalabaka with the town of Farsala and Athens. The link has significantly helped the region in terms of the economy as passengers from nearby areas travel to the city to use the rail. In the city of Kalabaka, there are several cultural and literary centers to visit, such as the Museum of Greek Education, the Kalabaka Library, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and the Museum of Natural History and Mushrooms.
